Format 1 is a series of installations that map the mathematical relationship between sound waves to physical planes and space, as a way to understand and 'look at' sound. The format No. 1 iPhone app functions as an optical synthesizer - turning black pixels into musical scale. The project is inspired by optical sound experiments from history such as the Russian futurist ANS synthesizer and graphics patterns are appropriated from various notation systems from history.
